CATHERINE MACKAY
[c1869-4/7/1949]
William, a landholder in Ardachu, Rogart, was born in Watten, Caithness, son of John Mackenzie, Ardachu, and Janet Dunnet. He is a grandson of Colin Mackenzie and Barbara Gordon.
Catherine (Kate) is the daughter of John Mackay and Johan Mackay.
In 1901 William and Katie were living at Ardachu with William's parents and his uncle Angus who was head of household. Their house had 6 rooms with one or more windows.
William died in 1920. Catherine continued to live at Ardachu until her death in 1949.
“There were many expressions of deep regret among neighbours and a wide circle of friends when it became known that Mrs Mackenzie, Ardachu, had passed away. Mrs Mackenzie who was in her 80th year was a native of the district and was highly respected. Her death has removed from Strath Fleet a much loved personality. Her husband, the late Mr William Mackenzie, predeceased her 29 years ago but Mrs Mackenzie continued successfully to farm the holding at Ardachu until her family grew up to help her …… the funeral on July 13th was large and representative …… to the members of her family, three sons and four married daughters the sympathy of the community is extended as well as to her brothers and sisters at home and abroad” (NT14/7/1949).
William and his wife are buried in Rogart.
They had the following children:
CATHERINE MACKENZIE (Kate) born 2 January 1898, Muie, Rogart – 1901 census with parents
