John was born at Ardachu, Rogart, son of Kenneth Mackenzie and Mary Jenny and grandson of Colin Mackenzie and Barbara Gordon.
He and Janet married on 1 February 1856.
In 1881 John and Janet were living in Laurel, Bower, Caithness, where John was a general labourer. Living with the family was John’s step-daughter, Diana Mackenzie, born circa 1848 Olrig, Caithness. She is actually his daughter-in-law (wife of Kenneth) and has been recorded twice, with the family and with her husband and child.
When his daughter Mary married in 1884 John Mackenzie was shown on her marriage certificate as an agricultural labourer. Some time between 1881 and the following census in 1891 Janet and John moved back to Ardachu, Rogart. They were there for the census with John’s brother and sister, Angus and Susanna. Both John and Janet died at Ardachu.
They had the following children:

ELIZABETH MACKENZIE, born 17 July 1864 Watten, Caithness [married George Dickson, coachman, aged 20, son of James Dickson, farm manager, deceased and Jessie Manson at Mains of Watten, Caithness on 29th February 1884] (MC) – Elizabeth and George had a daughter, Jessie Dickson born 17th December 1884 at Ardochie, Rogart. – 1881 census with parents
