Hugh, a tenant, is the son of Donald Mackay and Margaret Sutherland.
Catherine of Ardchuie, Rogart, is the daughter of Colin Mackenzie and Barbara Gordon.
Hugh is shown on the 1824 Militia List at Ardchow, aged over 30 and excused from service due to having children and being poor. He paid the sum of one shilling towards the erection of the Duke of Sutherland’s statue in 1834. Catherine died in 1839.
In 1841 Hugh was a tenant at Ardachu with his daughters. A Jessie Mackay aged 12 was also there.
In 1851 Hugh was a lotter of 9 acres at Ardachue. His daughters were still at home. John Mackay aged 16, born Rogart, was a servant.
In 1861 Hugh was a farmer of 10 acres at Ardachue. Hugh died at Ardchue in 1870. He is buried in Rogart with his wife.
In 1871 daughter Margaret was the tenant.
They had the following children:
COLIN MACKAY born 9 January 1812 Rogart (IGI) [died 13 May 1885] [married Elspat Mackay] – signed father’s death certificate in 1870
MARGARET MACKAY born circa 1816 Rogart – 1841 & 1851 census with widowed father 1861 census still with father, housekeeper – took over the croft on her father’s death in 1870 – was there with her sister Betty in 1871 but was not there in the 1881 census - she erected gravestone in memory of her parents.
ELIZABETH MACKAY (Betsy), born 10 February 1818 Rogart (IGI) [died 24 May 1876 Ardochue, Rogart – her brother, Colin, signed the death certificate] (DC) – 1841 & 1851 census with widowed father – 1861 census still with father – took over the croft on her father’s death in 1870 – was there with her sister Betty in 1871 but was not there in the 1881 census
