Hanna is the daughter of William Mackenzie and Elspat Mackay of Torbreck, Rogart and great granddaughter of Colin Mackenzie and Barbara Gordon. She was born Susanna but appears to have changed her name to Hanna. Murdoch was born in Caithness, son of John Mackay, master gardener and Georgina Morrison. Murdoch was living in Falkirk, a master gardener, at the time of his marriage to Hannah. They married at Torbreck, Rogart on 13th June 1879.

The 1881 census shows Murdoch, Hannah and baby John William, living at Gladstone Place, Edinburgh. Murdoch was employed as a jobbing gardener and was also studying art. Hannah’s sister, Elspeth Mackenzie, a dressmaker, was living with them. The 1891 census shows the family at West Norton Place, Edinburgh, where Murdoch was now recorded as a Free Church Missionary. The 1901 census shows the family at Morningside Road, Edinburgh and Murdoch was now a gardener and florist. Murdoch died at Ballifeary Road, Inverness, aged 83, in 1936.
