Helen was born at Ardchu, Rogart, daughter of Kenneth Mackenzie and Mary Jenny and granddaughter of Colin Mackenzie and Barbara Gordon. Alexander was born at Achavandra, Skelbo, Dornoch, son of Angus Mackay and Helen Mackenzie. Sometime after 1834 Alexander and Helen left Sutherland and went to Glasgow. Helen died there in 1850 from consumption (tuberculosis). Alexander then left for Australia where he settled in Geelong, Victoria. He died there in 1862.
They had the following children:
ANNABELLA MACKAY, born 2 April 1832 Rogart
KENNETH MACKENZIE MACKAY, born 6 May 1834 Ardchu, Rogart [died 16th November 1908] [married Margaret Falconer] - young Kenneth was raised from about the age of seven by his maternal grandparents
CHRISTINA MACKAY, died in Glasgow, aged 15 months from measles
